VOLUME LOSS TREATMENTS

Volume loss treatments can restore volume to different areas of the face, enhance facial contours, and create a more youthful appearance in areas that lose their support and become hollow.

As we age, our body's natural production of hyaluronic acid slows down, leading to a loss of deep hydration, which is responsible for plumping the skin. Bone resorption occurs, reducing the underlying support for muscles and soft tissue, while some fat pads shrink, and others expand and drop.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

I. Tear trough

As we age, the delicate structures around the eyes begin to lose both bone and fat padding. This can create a sunken, tired appearance, often related to the loss of upper medial cheek fat. Volume loss treatments in this area can help correct hollowing around the orbital region.

Darkness under the eyes is not an indication for this treatment alone; however, noticeable improvements in both colour and hollowing are often seen. This is an advanced treatment and must be performed by an experienced cosmetic nurse. Not all individuals are suitable candidates.

II. Mid-face | Cheeks & Nasolabial Folds

Part of the ageing process is a loss of volume in the face, particularly the cheeks. Volume loss treatments can be used to restore fullness and reduce shadowing, helping to achieve a natural, youthful contour of the cheeks that complements your facial structure. Volume treatment also helps reduce lines known as ‘naso-labial folds’, which run between the nose to the corner of the mouth. Whilst volume loss is a result of ageing, it can also be a result of lifestyle, weight loss and genetics.

III. Lips

Lip volume, shape, and definition are largely maintained by hyaluronic acid and collagen. Unfortunately, as we age, production of both declines. As a result, the upper lip begins to thin, flatten, and curl inward when we smile.

Treating the lips with volume loss methods helps to enhance shape, definition, and hydration and, if desired, add volume. Achieving facial harmony also involves assessing chin projection. If the lips are slightly increased in size or projection, the chin may appear more recessed.

IV. Lower Face | Chin & Jaw

During the ageing process, bone resorption causes the chin, bone around the mouth, and base of the nose to recede, reducing structural support in the lower face. Enhancing the chin with volume loss treatments can have many positive outcomes and typically lasts 9–18 months.

Variations in anatomy make us unique and are often linked to family genetics—one of which is a weak chin that lacks projection. In such cases, enhancing the chin to project further forward can improve overall facial balance. Optimising the chin can also create the perception of a smaller nose. Although adding volume to the chin is not a commonly requested treatment, it can sometimes be the most appropriate for achieving a client’s desired outcome.

  • If after 3 weeks, once most swelling and small bumps should have resolved, you are still not happy with the results, volume loss treatments can be reversed with a further treatment.
